...Our Organisation
More than an association, a community
The South African Society of Archivists (SASA) is a professional body established with the sole intention of promoting research and knowledge sharing among Archives, Records, and Information Management (ARIM) practitioners in South Africa. Furthermore, SASA promotes accountability through the development of best practice guidelines and expertise in Archives, Records, and Information Management (ARIM).
Over and above, the emergence of the fourth Industrial Revolution requires organisations to review and align processes, hence the role of SASA in research and knowledge sharing. To achieve its role, SASA works closely with relevant stakeholders to regulate proper care and access to records.
SASA seeks to perform the role common to professional associations, such as providing a forum for the sharing of professional expertise; laying down professional standards of performance; representing concerns of members to outside organisations; and protecting the interests of the profession.
In practice SASA achieves these objectives through inter alia the publication of a professional journal, the maintenance of a website, the holding of conferences, the development of regional branches, participation in the development of professional and training standards; and the provision of input on relevant matters.
SASA’s National Committee is elected by the membership for a two-year term of office. The Committee is actively engaged in a number of initiatives aimed at revitalising SASA and the profession.

SASA, established in 1959, has a rich history of upholding its founding objective of advancing archival science in South Africa. Our leadership comprises a dedicated National Management Committee elected by members for a three-year term.
The committee, consisting of full-time employed archivists, records management professionals, and academics, operates entirely on a voluntary basis, reflecting our collective commitment to the advancement of our profession.
