Chair Person
Jongisilo Pokwana ka Menziwa is current Chairperson of SASA. He is an oral historian, researcher and former member of both Esstern Cape Provincial Archives Advisory Council and the National Archives Advisory Council. He also serves as Chief of KwaZangashe village in the Eastern Cape. He has served as portfolio head for Research and Development at Oral History Association of South.

Maite Salphina Manganye is Deputy Chairperson of SASA, she holds a masters degree in information science and currently reading her phd with UNISA. She’s employed by North West Department of Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation as the Deputy Director of Provincial Archives. Serves a member of OHASA editorial board and head of publicity and promotions. She’s a mother of two

Mr ALEXIO MOTSI is the representative of the National Archives and Records Service of South Africa (NARSSA) on the South African Society of Archivists 9SASA). He is the Head of Preservation Management Services at NARSSA where his work includes collections care, risk and disaster management, conservation management, and digitisation, amongst other things. He has 35 years of experience in book and paper conservation, and preservation management. Mr Motsi has also led the development and implementation of various policies and strategies for the NARSSA which includes Digitisation Strategy, Preservation Policy, and currently working on the Disaster Management Plan. He was a Preservation and Conservation Tema Leader on the South Africa/Mali Timbuktu Manuscripts Project where he oversaw the training of Malian artisans, advised on the requirements for the building to house the manuscripts collection in Timbuktu, and oversaw the implementation of conservation strategy. Mr Motsi has played has been part of the activities of the IFLA-PAC programme in the Central and Southern African region. Mr Motsi’s interest is capacity building for archives in digitisation, conservation preservation, and disaster management. He holds an MSc in Archives and Records Management with the University of Dundee, Scotland.

Prof Ngoako Marutha is a C2 NRF research rated full Professor in the Department of Information Science at the University of South Africa (UNISA). He also serves as a representative of the Unisa Department of Information Science on the International Council on Archives (ICA). He is an ICA Regular Member of Section on University and Research Institution Archives (ICA/SUV), where he also serves as an executive member for bureau. He is also a regular member for ICA section for Archival education (SAE) and section for the National Assembly. He also serves ICA as a New Professionals mentor for year 2023. He is also a member of the South African Society of Archivists, where he serves on the National Executive Committee as Editor-in-chief for the Journal of the South African Society of Archivists from 2022 to date, and from 2018 to 2021 as Deputy Editor. Prof Marutha is also a review editor for the journal Frontiers in Research Metrics and Analytics. He serve as a Chairperson for Limpopo Provincial Archives and records service of South Africa Advisory Council (LPAAC), and serves as a member of the National Archives Advisory Council (NAAC) in the National Archives and Records Service of South Africa. He has published several books, chapters and articles in different national and international publications and presented conference papers. His research interest includes knowledge, archives, and records management, especially on patients and hospital records, electronic records, artificial intelligence, internet of things, cloud computing, Blockchain technology, enterprise content management, big data management and police case records security. The other field of his interest includes library management and marketing as well as Open Distance electronic learning (ODeL). His professional industry background includes working as an information and records manager as well as librarian in several public and private institutions over 13 years. He has been in the academic industry over five years so far. He holds Bachelor of Information studies and Bachelor of Information Studies honour from University of the North (UNIN)-now known as University of Limpopo (UL), Master of Information Science and Doctor of literature and philosophy from University of South Africa (UNISA). He serves as external examiner for master’s and doctoral research studies for over seven universities.

Dr. Tshepho Mosweu serves as the Deputy Editor of the Journal of the South African Society of Archivists. She is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Library and Information studies, University of Botswana, where she teaches courses related to archives and records management. A Y2- rated researcher by the National Research Foundation of South Africa, Dr Mosweu has published academic papers in peer reviewed journals and book chapters on digital records, archives, electronic records management systems, liquid communication, cloud- computing, research methods and oral history.

Dr Makutla Mojapelo is currently working as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Information Science at the University of South Africa (Unisa). His work at Unisa is centred around the following key performance areas: teaching and learning, community engagement, academic citizenship and research. Dr Mojapelo completed PhD in Information Science under the following research topic: IMPLEMENTATION OF FREEDOM OF INFORMATION LEGISLATION IN SOUTH AFRICA AND ZIMBABWE. The areas of his research interest include freedom of information, open data, digital data curation, archival advocacy and public programming. Dr Mojapelo is a young academic who has so far published 11 research articles in peer-reviewed local and international journals and one book chapter. He is regularly invited to review papers for local and international journals. In 2019, he successfully completed the Young Academic Programme (YAP), which was facilitated by UNISA Department of Human Resource Development. The programme gave him an exposure in various aspects of academia and thoroughly prepared him to engage in rigorous academic activities within and outside UNISA. In 2021, he participated in International Council on Archives (ICA) New Professional Programme. His involvement in the ICA NPP sparked a heightened interested in initiating discussions about structured mentorship programme in archives and records management.

Dr Mahlatse Mses Shekgola is highly committed lecturer with almost 4 years’ experience in teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate level at the Department of Information Science, University of South Africa (UNISA). I completed my Doctoral study titled: Digital curation of archives through open-source software in South Africa in 2024, under the supervision of Professor Mpho Ngoepe. I hold Master of Information Science, BA honours, postgraduate certificate in archival studies amongst other qualifications in the field of ARM. My research interest includes curation of digital archives, Software’s for digital records management, Storytelling, documentation and preservation of heritage, Teaching and Learning Management Systems, to name just a few. I am Unisa Young Academic Programme (YAP) Alumni (2022). I am appointed Moodle Champion for School of Arts since 2022. I participate in the following community engagement projects such as Storytelling and the Preservation of Cultural heritage, Sustainable Records Management Practice in the Aviation Sector as well as Computer and Information Literacy in KwaZulu-Natal.
I have presented in both national and international conferences such as SALGA Inter-provincial Records and ICT Forum, Northern Cape (2024), International Council on Archives Congress, Abu Dhabi (2023), Archival Education and Research Institute (AERI), Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana (2023), International Council on Archives 9th Annual Conference, Rome, Italy (2022), School of arts Triennial Conference, North West Province, Suncity (2023), South African Society of Archivist annual conferences (2023 & 2022), University of Zululand 20th Information Studies Conference, Kwa-Zulu Natal province (2019).
